To Line Dance, Or Not to Line Dance


Ok, I have not been line dancing since 1993. Maybe an electric slide here and there at a wedding. It's not a big thing around these parts.


Yet here we are. The local hall is starting Line Dance Tuesdays. And what exactly does a slightly plump Gen X-er wear to such a thing? My 20 year old Daisy Dukes bum bum is slightly, um, larger. And more prone to breakage. And I now live in one of those towns where everyone has known everyone forever and accept no newcomers. I am one of those. I've owned the cottage for over 10 years, but if you were unfortunate enough to watch the Real Housewives of Rhode Island, you'll know that if they didn't know you in kindergarten, you're sus. Oh, and no one actually looks like that in Rhode Island, so back to the what do I wear question.


Didn't want to spend a fortune in case I wound up sneaking out after 5 minutes, so I started browsing the old amazon.



My Affordable Amazon Line Dancing Outfit




I've been eyeing these little skirt shorts on Amazon all summer.


You know how it goes—you love something online, add it to your cart, remove it, add it back again, then wonder if it's only going to look cute on a 22-year-old who's 5'10" and built like a gazelle.

As someone who's 5'6" and wears a pretty solid size 12–14, I finally decided to take the chance.

I'm so glad I did.


At first glance, they look like a flirty little black skirt. Surprise—they're actually shorts with built-in liner shorts underneath. That means I can spin, kick, dance, climb into my Jeep, or accidentally attempt choreography beyond my skill level without worrying about any wardrobe malfunctions.


They're short, but not too short, and the fabric has enough weight to drape nicely instead of sticking out awkwardly. The quality honestly surprised me for the price. And some of the review pics seemed iffy.


The only thing I'd change? Give me pockets! Why can't we always have pockets???


Sizing Notes


Amazon's size chart suggested an XL, but I ordered my usual Large since that's what I normally wear in skirts.


There was a tiny tug to get them over my butt (the struggle was brief), but once they were on they fit beautifully thanks to the elastic waistband. If you're between sizes, I'd probably still recommend ordering what you typically wear rather than automatically trusting the chart.


The Rest of the Outfit

I paired the shorts with a vintage-inspired Free Bird graphic tee—a little country, a little rock 'n' roll. I love these tees from amazon and have a few of them. I'm a bit busty so went with the XL because I knew I'd be moving and sweating, but L would have worked.


To tie everything together, I added:

  • a brown leather belt

  • my own well-loved Frye boots (not technically cowboy boots...more like horse-girl boots)

  • beachy waves

  • a chunky gold necklace

  • my Maleficent ring, because every outfit deserves a tiny bit of villain energy


I also wrapped a bandana around my wrist— because line dancing in a basement during a heat wave is basically cardio in a sauna. Practical accessories count.




Final Thoughts


This outfit was exactly what I wanted: comfortable enough to dance for hours, cute enough to feel confident, and affordable enough that I didn't have buyer's remorse five minutes after clicking "Place Order."


Did I slightly overdress for line dancing at my tiny hometown American Legion?


Probably.

Do I regret it?

Not even a little.


There's nothing wrong with being the best-dressed person in the room—as long as you're dressed for the room.


Sometimes life is more fun when you lean into the occasion.
